Dental Implant Bondi, Bondi Junction, Sydney
1 Introduction
A dental implant is a modern answer to missing teeth. When teeth are missing, it can interfere with eating, talking, and socialising as it has long-term devastating effects on oral health. If you are missing one tooth or many teeth, dental implants can help. Dr Peter Poulos, your Sydney Cosmetic Dentist, can create beautiful dental implants to seamlessly replace your missing teeth and restore your smile.
2 Tooth Anatomy
Anatomy of a Tooth and Why it’s Important
When we think of a tooth, we only see the part that protrudes from the gum, which is the dental crown. But the entire tooth consists of the dental crown area with enamel and dentin, the surrounding gum that holds it in place, and the tooth root where blood and nerves reside.
The tooth root is an important part of your tooth and oral health. It contains blood vessels through which your teeth are nourished. It connects and secures your tooth to your jawbone, so you can talk and eat without your teeth sliding around. Chewing stimulates blood flow through the root and helps your jawbone stay strong. But when a tooth root is missing, the jawbone is no longer stimulated, so it can begin breaking down or going through a process known as resorption. This can result in the area around the mouth looking shrivelled and prematurely aged.
3 DENTAL IMPLANT
What, Exactly, is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a post that interfaces with your jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. This tiny post is surgically placed into the jawbone, and then your jaw is given time to heal.
During the healing process, osseointegration takes place, meaning that your bone is stimulated and begins to grow around the implant. Once healed, the implant is now ready for an abutment and dental crown to replace the entire missing tooth.
4 Benefits
The Many Benefits of a Dental Implant
Replacing a tooth with a dental implant is a way to restore the tooth and the tooth root. You will regain the function of your bite with a prosthesis that is considered permanent and the closest solution to a natural tooth. Patients enjoy dental implants to replace missing teeth because they feel, function and look like natural teeth.
These are some of the many benefits of a dental implant:
5 Multiple Uses
Implants for Multiple Uses
Single dental implants
replace one missing tooth and its root. This solution is preferred by patients who have only one missing tooth but prefer not to alter surrounding teeth to support a bridge.
Single dental implants can replace teeth in a way that looks and feels amazingly natural. Just like a real tooth, your implant crown will emerge from your gums and it would be extremely difficult for anyone to tell it isn’t your own tooth.
Dr Poulos will take enormous care when designing your implant crown, to ensure the colour and shape blend in beautifully with your own teeth. Single dental implants are very easy to maintain as they can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
Implant bridges
are the newest technology in dental bridges. Instead of altering surrounding teeth for dental crowns that support a bridge, dental implants can be used to support the bridge.
This is an ideal solution to replace missing teeth that are next to each other without altering surrounding teeth.
Implant-supported dentures
Multiple dental implants
are used to replace multiple missing teeth that are not side-by-side. To get multiple implants, Dr Peter Poulos will evaluate the health of your bone and gums to see if this solution would be suitable for you.
You won’t need to replace every single tooth with a dental implant, as relatively few are needed to support even quite large dental bridges.
It can be the ideal solution if your existing natural teeth are too weak to support a bridge and will provide you with strong and stable teeth that will allow you to smile and eat.
