2 DENTAL EMERGENCY
What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency might be the result of an accident, trauma, or infection and may cause great pain that cannot be relieved with common pain medications. The sooner you get treatment and the right treatment, the quicker you get relief.
Emergency dentistry can help stop the spread of oral infection and, in some cases, may save a tooth. The following are some of the more common dental emergencies we see at Sydney Cosmetic Dentist:
Lost filling
Orthodontic repairs
Lost or loose dental crown

4 During Emergency
What To Do During a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency may be painful and naturally upsetting, but knowing what to do during a dental emergency will empower you to make good choices. If you experience profuse bleeding or suspect a broken bone, then going to the ED is necessary. However, a dental emergency is best handled by a dentist who is equipped for these scenarios.
If you have a true dental emergency, then call our clinic here in Bondi Junction to schedule an emergency dentistry appointment. Be sure to let us know it is a dental emergency. Stay calm, and see if any of the remedies may apply to your situation:
Tooth Pain or Toothache
If over-the-counter pain medicine does not work to resolve tooth pain, try putting a spot of clove oil on the tooth. Gently brush around the tooth to remove food particles that can cause or aggravate pain. Gently rinse your mouth with tepid salt water to remove any remaining debris and keep bacteria at bay.
Schedule an emergency dentistry appointment with us since tooth pain may be due to a cavity, which can be treated. If we find that an infection has gone into the tooth root, we can treat it with root canal therapy, which will remove the infection to stop it from spreading and eliminate pain.
Jaw Pain
Pain in the jaw is often due to a tooth infection, gum infection, or impacted or problematic wisdom tooth. If left untreated, infections can spread to the rest of your body, affecting vital organs.
Untreated, problematic wisdom teeth can not only cause great pain but can become infected and even damage other teeth by pressing on them and crowding them. Call to schedule an emergency dentistry visit with us right away so Dr Peter Poulos can find the source of the pain and treat it.
Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth
Chipping or cracking a tooth in an accident or other type of trauma can be scary, but we can help. Rinsing your mouth with tepid salt water can help keep bacteria at bay and provide mild pain relief.
Even if you don’t feel pain, call us to make an appointment right away so we can save the tooth with the right treatment, which may include a dental veneer, bonding, or a crown. Each of these solutions will help protect the tooth and its structure so you can regain the full function of your bite.
Knocked Out Tooth
Sometimes, an accident may knock out your tooth. If this happens, find the tooth and save it or store it in a container of full-fat milk (not water). Cover the container and bring it to your emergency dentistry appointment. Do not try to wash the tooth or rub it in any way, as this can damage it.
Facial Swelling
If you have facial swelling that is not due to a blow to the face, it may be due to a tooth or gum infection. An over-the-counter pain medication can help with pain while reducing swelling at the same time.
Call us to schedule an emergency dental appointment so we can diagnose the problem and treat it right away. Keep your head elevated until your appointment, which may help minimise pain and swelling.
