2 DENTAL ANXIETY

Dental Anxiety – A Common Problem

Dental anxiety arises from a fear of the dentist, dental treatments, or the dental office environment. It causes patients to procrastinate or neglect their oral health because they just can’t bring themselves to make a dentist appointment. They may fear being judged or worry that the appointment will cause pain. Some signs or symptoms of dental anxiety include:
\

Forgoing dental checkups

\
Avoidance of treating dental problems
\
Rapid heartbeat when thinking about dental appointments
\
Nausea, sweaty palms, or dizziness when thinking about dental appointments
\
Lack of sleep leading up to the dental appointment

Fortunately, today’s technology and methods allow us to safely treat dental problems in our Sydney Eastern Suburbs clinic with sedation or sleep dentistry. In some cases, these methods help patients overcome their fear of the dentist.

5 Our Help

How We Can Help

How We Can Help In Bondi, Bondi Junction, Sydney Sydney Cosmetic Dentist

When you come to Sydney Cosmetic Dentist, our team will do all we can to help with your dental anxiety. We will ensure you are as comfortable as possible, and Dr Peter Poulos will ensure that you are monitored during your appointment for the utmost safety.

The following are some more techniques we can use to help:

Happy gas

also called nitrous oxide, is a popular relaxation method and is easy to apply. Simply wear a small mask over your nose and relax. The happy gas will quickly promote a sense of deep relaxation as your stress reduces. It is the only sedative that wears off quickly enough so you can drive yourself home afterwards.

Oral medications

may be used by some patients to help them relax right before an appointment and then stay relaxed throughout. In some cases, an oral medication may be prescribed and taken one hour before the dental appointment.

Anaesthetics

are used to numb your gums, teeth and the surrounding area to be treated so you feel no pain during the treatment. When coupled with happy gas or another form of light sedation, many patients are able to undergo their treatments and soon overcome anxieties associated with dental treatments.

Sedation dentistry

may be administered through an IV or intravenous drip. This is designed to induce a very deep state of relaxation, and most patients do not remember the treatment once complete.

Sleep dentistry

is the most extreme solution for dental anxiety and is usually reserved for extensive treatments such as oral surgeries. Monitoring is required during the entire treatment, and patients are required to get a ride home as sedative effects last for some time after treatment.
When you come to Sydney Cosmetic Dentist, our goal is to help you feel as comfortable as possible and relaxed during your treatment. This is accomplished by working with you and ensuring you feel confident coming to us for all your dental health needs.
